Getting Started with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Ready to begin your journey? Follow these steps to get started:

  1. 1. Registration

    First, register as a participant:

    • School/College Award Unit: Contact your Award Leader to start the registration process.
    • No Award Unit?: Reach out to the National Youth Award Division of the NYSC at awardlanka@gmail.com or call 0112856563 for assistance. You can also contact a nearby NYSC branch for guidance.

    Submit the Award Participant Application and Award Plan, along with a registration fee of 500 LKR.

  2. 2. Work with Your Award Leader

    Your Award Leader will mentor and guide you, helping you set goals and track progress.

  3. 3. Choosing Your Activities

    With your Award Leader, choose activities for each section:

    • Voluntary Service
    • Skills
    • Physical Recreation
    • Adventurous Journey (plus the Gold Residential Project for Gold participants)

    Your goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound).

  4. 4. Track Your Progress

    Log your progress using the Online Record Book (ORB) or manual sheets. Your Section Assessor will monitor and verify your activities.

    Award Timeline & Section Requirements:

    • Bronze: Continue one section for an additional 3 months to advance to the next level.
    • Silver: If you’ve completed Bronze, add 6 more months to one section to move to Silver.
    • Gold: Complete all sections over 12 months, including the Gold Residential Project.
  5. 5. Find Assessors

    Each section requires a skilled adult as your Assessor, who will help set goals, monitor progress, and verify achievements. Your Award Leader can assist in finding suitable Assessors.

    Note: Assessors cannot be family members.

  6. 6. Completing the Award

    Submit your Award Summary Reports to your Award Leader, who will compile them with your Record Book. Once reviewed by the Training Panel, you’ll be recognized at the Grand Annual Award Ceremony!
